Survivor: China fans remember Jaime Dugan and Erik Huffman as one of the show’s early couples. They met on the island in 2007, married, welcomed a son named Harper, and for years looked like the success story the show loved to point to. That narrative has officially fallen apart. A South Carolina judge has reportedly found Dugan, 41, in direct contempt for failing to return Harper, 16, to his father and for missing court hearings. The judge also declared Harper “missing and endangered” and called for Dugan’s immediate arrest, according to court documents obtained by the Daily Mail.
Dugan’s version of events is very different. She denies being on the run, telling outlets that the FBI has not contacted her and that Harper has completed wellness checks. A family friend says the teen was last seen with his mother in Cayce, South Carolina, on August 30. Meanwhile, Erik Huffman has said publicly that he fears for his son’s safety, and his statement that he hates his son has “been ripped away” has been widely shared.
For anyone following from a distance, this story touches on the questions we all wrestle with: what happens when a court order and a parent’s instincts collide, and who protects the kid in the middle? Authorities are asking anyone with information to call the FBI at 803-551-4200. Have you ever seen a custody dispute play out publicly, and do you think the attention helps or hurts the family involved?
